<I°_°I> and other tales

November 8th, 2015 (01:01 pm)
current location: KY16 8SX

Electro swing is perhaps a bit misnamed – it’s a combination of 20s or 30s-style trad jazz (rather than the slightly later and smoother swing) with more modern instruments and  styles including hip hop and electronic dance music. The UK’s 2015 Eurovision entry, "Still In Love With You" by Electro Velvet was an example, though a kind of disappointing one. I was pleased it was a bit different and wanted to like it, but couldn’t convince myself and ultimately it didn’t do too well. We scored a majestic 5 points, only 360 behind the ultimate winners, Sweden.

Happily, the French do it better and msinvisfem pointed me in their direction. Caravan Palace formed about ten years ago, and have just released their third album, <I°_°I>. All three are fun and listenable, and I’d recommend checking them out. Here are their official videos, and it’s also worth skipping to the end where there’s a couple of live performance videos, including a full concert. If you like what you see, they’re currently touring and will be in the UK in December, including a date in Glasgow.

Why <I°_°I>? Watch the earlier videos to find out! But if they’re not quite your cup of tea, try <I°_°I> too, as I think the blend of old and new shifts a bit in the third album.

WHY?! did you even mention the UK's Eurovision entry this year?!!! Way to sell electroswing. (-_-)

For clarification, anyone familiar with electroswing, would have recognized that the UK's entry as electroswing but as reaally BAD electroswing. The kind of music that would never lead to a new genre because it was, mercifully, forgettably bad.

Caravan Palace and Parov Stellar (what the heck, why no shoutout for him?) are really good electroswing and why electroswing has even developed into a new genre since the mid-2000s.

FYI, I knew of electroswing only tangentially for the last couple years because I am in the swing dance community. However, it was only after Caravan Palace and Parov Stellar kept popping up on my Scissor Sisters station on Pandora and it was actually catchy enough that I would want to listen the whole song through, that I have a become a fan of the genre.

Also, FYI, a lot electroswing (like many songs of any genre) is not very good but there is a reason why Parov Stellar and Caravan Palace are the best known names in the genre. If you have a service similar to Pandora, create stations for Parov Stellar and CP and you can familiarize yourself with many other individual good songs, though you will more than half the time be skipping. It's a shame that there aren't other artists with the same consistency as CP and PS but that just seems to be the case at the moment.

And Gavin, you better go to that concert...

I wanted to mention something people might already have heard, and Electro Velvet was more that than Parov Stelar, but he is also worth checking out.

Also thank you for choosing "Dramaphone" and "Suzy." Those songs are so good! But sad that you didn't post "Brother Swing" - shameful.

There's no fancy video for "Brother Swing". However, having said that, here's an 8-minute long live version:
