Tenth Doctor

April 16th, 2005 (12:30 am)

It's official then... David Tennant.

Edit: ...and the first Doctor younger than me. Have you noticed how young the policemen are becoming these days?

**urgh** I am sure he is fit for the part but he looks like he just retired from a boy band...

This boggly-eyed loonie photo from a Harry Potter site (he's in the next film) makes him look a little less like boy-band material, but still very young. I don't think it's quite as striking when you see him in a serious role, like his part in Quatermass a couple of weeks back.

I hadn't seen that he was Barty Junior.

Oh, he'll be awesome as him!

(Ok, I'm a fan. But he /is/ a good actor)

Three

I don't know the character (I'm intending to buy the books once JK's published the last one) but I have to admit I'm now intrigued. I guess I'll have to wait for the film though.

Thanks for saying who he will be playing! I had thought when ggreig gave me a Harry Potter link that I should find out who he will be playing but got side tracked and didn't follow up the thought...

And 'YES!', from that picture he does look as though he will make a great Barty Crouch Jr. From looks alone he is able to convey (to me at least) an excellent mixture of innocence and madness! :-D

The BBC website already(!) has a gallery of desktop wallpapers featuring him in previous roles.

It seems rather silly of the BBC to be putting up wallpapers of him in a non-Who context already. I mean what self-respecting Who-vian would plop his face on their desktop for the next however-many-months until the next series?

Oh, plenty! Have a look at the Paul McGann Estrogen Brigade, who still appear to be a loyal following nine years after Paul McGann appeared as the Eighth Doctor in the US-made telemovie. I used to read the rec.arts.drwho newsgroup in those days, and they were a significant presence in the newsgroup at the time.

Yeah but didn't Paul McGann have to earn that sort of devotion by playing as the Doctor first? (Or did I miss something when looking at the website?)

Anyway I wouldn't have thought the mere mention of being selected to play the Doctor would earn Who fan loyalty. Again, I would thought from the discriminating fan there would be a wait-and-see attitude.

OT - Are you finally happy now that you have got a two part-er with a cliff-hanger? :-P

They were "officially" formed after the first broadcast, but I'm sure I remember salivating taking place beforehand. Of course, there wasn't as much lead time between his casting and broadcast - about a couple of months, if I recall, as he was cast late in the process.

I think they made a bit of a meal of the final reveal of the Slitheen when it could have been more of a swift aperitif, but yes - I could feel a cliffhanger coming on and it had a sense of rightness about it :-)

Bad Photo..

He looks a lot less boy bandish in Casanova, or in the recent live Quatermass Experiment.

Odd, as I was just thinking recently that Peter Davison is looking almost old enough now to be the Doctor.

I think he's slightly older than Peter Davison was when he took on the role (I think he was thirty at the time, rather than thirty-three). I have to say I prefer a more patrician character actor as the Doctor, but casting a pretty boy perhaps appeals to a broader cross-section of the public. So long as he's a good actor - and he seems to be - he should be able to make something worthwhile of it.

On a side issue, have you noticed that "character actor" appears to have become the polite way of saying "plug ugly"?

I agree - I prefer patrician character actors too. :) I always felt that Peter Davidson was far to young to play the Doctor.
